....suddenly the police drew a cordon and we were caught, right there in front of the Virgin of the Trinidad. The brass band filed by and we could touch the stucco frame of the platform and join in the worship of the crowd... Thinking all was over, we stopped off for a snack and a glass of vino tinto in a small reaturant little knowing that we were on the main route for the night. And so, there we were, on the pavement as the whole company responsible for 'Christ riding into Jerusalem on a donkey' arrived. Officers, torch bearers, thurifers with incense and hooded brothers assembled before the boys' band of oboes, trumpets and drums. The triumphant music which accompanied the flotilla, however, was soon replaced by the lament of 'Christ and the robbers on the cross'. Slowly, purposefully, solemnly, they advanced. There were tears in the eyes of the spectators as they took part in the Passion and thought the thoughts that only they could know. And then we saw one more, on our way back to the bus. Crammed against the wall with Sevillans of all ages, living through the week that is the most important in their lives, or so it seemed to us, we were there.
